8/7/2023 0 Comments Subvert expectations synonym![]() Pulp fiction subverts the audience’s expectations as it is seen as an unconventional film as it doesn’t follow a chronological linear story. The 70s cars also confuse the audience as there isn’t one set time or Era where this film is set in which can attract the audiences attention as they become interested in the different props used throughout the film. Other mixes of time and Era are seen in the 50s Diner scene when Vincent takes Mia out for dinner and the mix of costumes worn from different eras. This could be to build up a relationship with the characters to the audience as in classic Hollywood films this irrelevant dialogue is usually not written in to the script and we jump straight to the action.Īudience expectations are subverted due to the time and Era presented in this film as in one part of the film in ‘The Gold Watch’ story we see the man in the car with 40s scenes projected in the rear of the car to make it look like the car is actually driving when in fact is just a projection in the background. Throughout the film Tarantino shows us the bits we don’t usually see in a film with irrelevant dialogue. The use of the shaky handheld camerawork is used to make it look like the audience is someone looking around and following the action with this very long shot with no cuts or edits.Īnother way Tarantino subverts audience’s expectations is through the use of irrelevant dialogue used throughout the film. This is different to conventional formats as shot reverse shots are usually used to follow conversations with cuts and edits to make the conversation flow. At one stage the camerawork follows a conversation moving backwards and forward between the two people who are on opposite sides of the room, this makes the audience feel like they are stood in the room following the action and they are part of the scene. This scene is shown as if it is from the audience’s perspective stood in the room watching on as the scene unfolds. For example there is a scene where Mia has an overdose of drugs and has been take to a drug dealer’s house to receive an adrenaline shot. The use of camerawork Tarantino uses for this film can be seen as unconventional to other mainstream films in certain areas of the film. ![]() The sense of confusion the audience gets throughout the film draws them in further as they want to continue watching to work out what is actually happening and piece all the different stories together to understand the overall plot. Up until the final story, ‘ The Bonnie Situation’ the overall storyline does not make sense, where as in this scene the story moves back to one of the first scenes in the movie and catches up to where we were initially. The next story is about ‘The Gold Watch’, then ‘The Bonnie Situation’ before finishing in the Diner again where each of these stories are not seen in the correct chronological order. The film commences in the Diner before leading on to the story of ‘Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace’s wife’. Non-chronological order is shown as one of that main characters, ‘Vincent’ is shot and killed half way through the film all though we are re-joined with him soon after in the next story. As the stories are not in chronological order it can become very confusing for the audience to understand and gives the audience a lot to think about throughout the film, which could play to Tarantino’s advantage as his films will be remembered for this. This immediately grabs the audience’s attention as this is not the conventional way to structure a film, as films tend to be seen in chronological narrative structure. The chronological ending of the film is technically after the 2 nd story however Quentin Tarantino did not portray this that way. The film pulp fiction is fragmented into chapters from 3 different perspectives. These novels were known for their graphic violence and punchy dialogue. This is very much seen throughout the whole film as it refers to pulp magazines and hardboiled crime novels popular during the mid-20 th century. The definition states- ‘Pulp fiction is a magazine or book containing lurid subject matter and being characteristically printed on rough, unfinished paper’. This film is described as iconic due to its narrative structure, ironic mix of humour and violence and non-linear story line.Īt the start of the film a definition of Pulp Fiction is seen on the screen. ![]() Pulp fiction was released in 1994 and directed by Quentin Tarantino. ![]() In what ways does pulp fiction subvert the audience’s expectations?
